The Listed Private Equity Plus Fund is the only actively managed, open-end mutual fund focused exclusively on listed private equity, venture capital and investment banking companies that are heavily engaged in the private equity sector. The fund is comprised of listed securities traded on major stock exchanges around the globe.
There are two primary reasons to invest in private equity:
Private equity returns have historically outperformed broad market equity indices. According to the Cambridge Private Equity Index, Private Equity has provided more than a 13% annualized return for the 10 Year period ending March 2008 outperforming the S&P 500 by more than 1,100 basis points per year. Second, private equity has only a modest correlation to public equities, suggesting that it provides added diversification to traditional portfolios of stocks and bonds (Venture Economics, December 2006).
Private equity has increasingly become a significant component of most institutional portfolios. Over the past ten years investors have committed over $1.6 Trillion to private equity according to Venture Economics. Some of the country’s largest pension plans and endowments are making significant commitments to private equity as an alternative asset class (Venture Economics, December 2006).
Most private equity investments have historically been through funds that are not listed in any stock market. Over the last few years, increasing numbers of private equity businesses have listed on stock exchanges around the world in order to raise capital and to create liquidity. Listed private equity firms are liquid and can be traded just like any other stock listed on an exchange. This is not so for private equity funds, which have specific investor accreditation requirements, high minimum account requirements, investment lock-up and withdrawal periods.
These firms may take the form of publicly listed investment companies, BDCs (business development companies), investment trusts, SPACs (special purpose acquisition vehicles), funds and fund of funds.
Globally, there are over 275 listed private equity securities and most are concentrated in the US, UK, Europe, Asia and Australia. Vista Research and Management applies a screening process that is designed to diversify the Listed Private Equity Plus Fund among geographic regions, small, mid and large market capitalizations, industry, business structure and investment strategy. Companies are then analyzed and ranked according a series of financial and performance measures, key management’s track record and overall management depth and experience. The aim to construct a portfolio comprising 30 to 50 listed private equity securities.
